Did You Say MICHAEL Haydn?

Comments Off on Did You Say MICHAEL Haydn?

We all know and love Joseph Haydn – the ‘Father of the Symphony’ and his music – from the Creation to the Surprise Symphony, and the string quartets. But did you know that his brother, Michael, was also an accomplished composer and musician?

At our concert on Sunday 15th March, we’ll be singing his Requiem Solemne in C Minor that was actually performed in full at Joseph Haydn’s funeral. The choir is enjoying getting to know music from another Haydn and it is a work of lyricism, depth, and beauty. Some have noted that there are similarities to the later Requiem of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Indeed, Mozart heard the first three performances of Haydn’s work and was strongly influenced by it.

We’ll also be singing a sacred work fit for Lent – Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater (arr. Desmond Ratcliffe). The words are a meditation on the suffering of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she stood at the foot of the cross during his crucifixion.

We will be joined by four wonderful soloists – Anna Cavaliero, Joanna Harries, Alex Haigh and Samuel Oram, and the piano accompanist, Paul Ayres.

We hope you can come and join us for this special evening on Sunday 15th March at 7:30pm at St Lawrence’s Church, Eastcote.
